What the wiki is it?
EnviroWiki.org.uk is an open mapping and accountability tool that strengthens communication within the environmental movement helping it to reach out to a wider audience. It is a free-to-edit site that shares information, advice and debate.
EnviroWiki.org.uk uses the same software as Wikipedia and shares its key aim of making important information accessible to all through the collaboration of its users. However, instead of encyclopaedic information, EnviroWiki is a place to bring together details on local environmental action, along with creative tips, advice and discussion about the science and politics of the growing environmental issues. It's also a hub for information about environmental organisations and initiatives.
Its success relies on collaboration, so come and share all you know about the environmental activity and support in your area, as well as tips, advice and discussion on the key issues!
Who is it meant for?
EnviroWiki.org.uk is for everyone! You could be a curious individual, an organisation looking for support with your own changes or outreach, or a member of the scientific, activist and political communities. The nature of EnviroWiki allows you to create comprehensive real-time updates and gives you instant access to growing networks of environmentally minded organisations and movements.
Organisations and initiatives
Our aim is to work with the existing environmental movement: compiling information on environmental activity, discussing and debating environmental issues in a way that is accessible to new audiences and encouraging the sharing of best practice between organisations.
Local Action
EnviroWiki.org.uk is mainly categorised by local area, with a particular focus at borough and county level. We initially hope to encourage users to focus on their local area.
Creative collaboration
What makes EnviroWiki.org.uk different from other wikis is its use of categories at the centre of the resource-sharing. The category system of EnviroWiki uses the same principle as that of 'tagging' - you can add your wiki entry to as many relevant existing categories as you like, or create your own subcategory. Like tags, these categories can cross themes, subjects and (most especially in the case of EnviroWiki.org.uk) geographical location. Grounded by a few ‘top’ categories, users of EnviroWiki have the freedom to organise their content as they like.
Getting involved
Like all wikis, EnviroWiki relies on collaboration for its success. It needs contributors, both to add content and to spread the word (preferably in that order) and only if people do use it and add to it, will it be of worth to anyone else.
Explore EnviroWiki to see what others have already added. If you find information that is wrong, or incomplete, it is down to you to correct it. Working together, we can make EnviroWiki the first point of call for all environmental queries.
If you like the sound of getting involved, but are a bit unsure about what to add, we have written a (somewhat rudimentary) list of content ideas that we'd like to see on EnviroWiki.
