Putting entries into categories
A wiki works by attaching entries backwards. Only once you place a category tag at the end of your entry will it be listed on the category page.
The tag to add your entry to a category (or subcategory) is [[Category:category name]]
For example: You wish to add an entry to the Leeds waste reduction sub category. At the end of your entry you add in the tag, [[Category:Leeds waste reduction]]. Once you have saved it, your entry should now be listed on the Leeds waste reduction category page.
Note: If you want to link to a category, rather than add your entry to it, you must add a colon - ':' - before 'Category'.
e.g. write [[:Category:Local Action]] to link to the Local Action category, and [[Category:Local Action]] to add it to the Local Action category.
Choosing the right category for your EnviroWiki entry
Ensuring your entry is put into the correct sub category is most important for entries that have a primarily local appeal, i.e. those in the 'Local Action' category.
For all non 'Local Action' entries, please feel free to add it straight to the key category (i.e. 'Orgs and initiatives'; 'Tips and advice'; Science and Review') as well as into relevant subcategories.
Please always remember to check that your entry has been placed in the correct category before you end the session.
Creating a new EnviroWiki category
Creating a new category is simple. In the search box (on the left sidebar), enter "Category:" followed by the name of the category you wish to create. (e.g. Category:Bright Blue Bananas)
If the category does not already exist, you will be asked whether you wish to create it. Remember that you must be logged in to create or edit any EnviroWiki content. For more help on registering or logging in, see Help:Registering and logging in.
Once you have been taken to the new category page, you will be offered the chance to edit the text on the category page. It is up to you whether you wish the category page to have text, or simply be the 'houser' of your EnviroWiki entries.
Whatever you do, please remember to add your category to an already existing category, to ensure that it remains part of the wider EnviroWiki category system.
Adding one category to another (thereby making it a subcategory) is done by using the exact same tags as those used for adding entries to categories. For help with these tags, see Putting entries into categories above.
