Creating a new wiki entry

  1. If your search for a particular page comes back with no matches, you are offered the opportunity to create the page. Click on "create this page" to do so.
  2. At this stage, if you are not already logged in, you will be asked to. For help on logging in, please see Help:Registering and logging in.
  3. Once you have logged on, you will be asked to return to the page that you wished to create / edit.
  4. You can now begin entering in the information that you wish to appear on the wiki entry in the edit box.
  5. Above the edit box are a series of formatting tools. With regards to formatting, you can make your entry as simple or as complex as you feel you are able. See Help:Basic formatting for some of the basic editing functions explained.]]
  6. When you are editing your wiki entry, you can preview what it will look like. You can do this at any time, without losing or saving the entry itself. To do this, click the box "Show preview" at the bottom of the page. At the top of the screen, it will show you what the page will look like. If you scroll down, you will find the editing box further down the page. Do note, however, that it is only a preview, and the changes you have made have not yet been saved.
  7. Once you are happy with the way your page looks, please add it to the relevant category (or subcategory) found in the contents list. If you feel that there isn't a relevant category, feel free to add in your own. You place a page in a category is by adding a category tag at the end. For more details on how to add a page to a category, look at Help:Categories. Adding pages to categories will help to keep the wiki tidy, as well as allowing more people to find your article by browsing the contents list.
  8. If you are providing information that includes reference to a location, a helpful addition is to add in a map of the location. For help adding maps, look at Help:Maps.
  9. When you are happy with your wiki entry, click on "Save page" at the bottom of the page.

Before leaving the session, always remember to check that the entry has been successfully added to the correct category. You can verify this by checking that it is listed on the category page.

Editing an existing page

One of the key features of a collaborative space is its ability to peer-monitor the pages in order to constantly improve the site. This means that if you see something on someone else's page that is misspelled, inaccurate or in someway misleading, you are encouraged to correct it. (There are some exceptions to this rule. See Editing exceptions below.)

  1. It is very simple to edit an existing wiki entry. All you need to do is to click "edit" (found in the top right hand corner of the page).
  2. You will then be shown the edit box, with the text and formatting of the existing entry.
  3. To add in further information, follow stages 4 to 9 of "Creating a new wiki entry" (above). See also Help:Basic formatting.

Please remember that all information (and comment, where relevant) added to EnviroWiki must be accurate, impartial and free from copyright.
