What are we looking for?
There are many different types of content that can be contributed to EnviroWiki, to develop it into a useful shared resource. Here a few of those that we have in mind. They have been separated into the four key categories of EnviroWiki, in order to (attempt to) give these key categories context. However, many entries will be relevant to more than one key category. See more on categorising EnviroWiki entries here.
Local Action:
Initially we have taken the word 'Local' to refer simply to proximity, indexing entries from regions through to 3-digit postal areas. However, in the future, there may be times when the term 'local' may be extended to a wider, online use. Types of Local Action entries could include:
- Recycling points, preferably with a corresponding google map
- Council environmental policies - these can often be difficult to find, but getting them onto EnviroWiki will allow other users to find them...
- Local organisations, campaigns and initiatives that are attempting to deal with issues of and around environmental concerns. Add in information about who you are, what you're up to and how others can get in touch with you. See Henley Air Quality for a good example of an essentially localised initiative. Other examples might include car pooling schemes, green credit unions, shared allotments or veg box initatives...
- Existing or potential power stations, mines ...
Organisations and intiatives:
One aim of EnviroWiki is to provide support to those already involved in the growing environmental movement. To do this, we hope to encourage existing campaigns and organisations to add and maintain their own entry and keep EnviroWiki browsers up-to-date with what their activities.
We are looking for organisations, campaigns and initiatives that focus at a local, regional, national or international level and who attempt to deal with issues of and around environmental concerns. These might range from an initative raising awareness about UK oil use, through to an international organisation working in development. Add in information about who you are, what you're up to and how others can get in touch with you. For more examples, see Example EnviroWiki entries.
As well as physically located organisations, we also want to encourage online initiatives and campaigns. Purely online campaigns can often work in a very different way to traditional ones. Virtuality has made a big impact on campaigning, as it can overcome the classic constraints of time and proximity, and thereby attract (and compile) large levels of small-scale action.
Tips and Advice
It is easier to explain what kinds of information we want here by describing a few examples.
- Lists of simple information are generally are a good thing, and they are particularly suitable for a wiki format. One example is a list we have set up to help people with plastic labelling. So much of our plastic rubbish has to be thrown away because we don't know what type of plastic it is. We have begun a list to try and identify both branded products and general types of products, along with their plastic number. Come and add in any you know. See [[for more
- Advice for a particular event / stage in life. If (for example) you've undergone a green wedding, or have just moved house, add in information about what you found out, which companies / schemes you came across and other tips that might help others about to undergo the same.
- Tips/advice for a particular audience (e.g. students / other cohabitants, homeowners, office workers, farmers, etc etc.)
Science and Review
Types of Science and Review content could include:
- Graphs and tables
Please note - if you wish to add any image to EnviroWiki, you must make sure you download it from the original website and then upload it onto EnviroWiki. Do not just stream it from their website - you will be using their server, which in the world of online-sharing is considered to be incredibly rude. - Articles - please share with us any of your writings. When you add them, they will initially be unprotected and free-to-edit by any registered user. However, if you want to ensure no one edits your work, just send us a message and we will protect it for you. (For more details on the EnviroWiki policy of locked pages, see here
